When I’m on stage with Drive or at the jazz gig I like to play tight little chords that leave a little bit of extra space in the sound… You end up with something like the chord movements that Wes Montgommery was doing or maybe more like Jim Hall.
Most of the time I achieve this sound by leaving out the root note. For the example I’ll use standard dominant 7th chords and alterations. You can do this with other chords... just leave off the root note. For more flavor leave off the root and the 3rd and start your chord on the 7th interval. You end up with 7th, 3rd and 5th with the 7 being the lowest tone in the chord. That's how most of the chords below are constructed. Here’s an example progression… try it out… G7 / / / G13 / / / G9 / / / G13 / G7+5 / C9 / / / C7 / / / G7 / / / G9 / / / D7 / / / C13 / / / G7 / / / D7+5 / / / For the D7 and D7+5 chords I would use the same shape as I do for the C chords (in most cases) I like to use the augmented chords (7+5 - said seven sharp five or just augmented) to get some cool movement from the one to the four of the progression and also for the 5th on the turnaround I also like to use a 3625 turnaround but not in this lesson.
