Chris Watson and a few other people commented on the chords I was using for I Will Survive so I thought I'd throw some music together.

This is a standard example of my chord work. I try to use extended voicings whenever possible... maj7ths, 9ths etc etc. When you can fit these sounds into a pop or rock song you should go for it because over time it will open up your hearing and you will be able to easily alternate between standard chords and "jazz" chords.

The first 8 measures show full chord voicings. These are kind of your basic jazz chords. Mickey Baker Chords... whatever you call them.

Measures 9-16 are smaller chord voicings with the root note omitted from most of them (other than the E chords).

I really like this sound more that the full chords... it's jazzier, it's dense, the dissonance is more noticable and to me the movement is better sounding that chords with their root notes in the bass.

Check out Jim Hall if you like those small dense chords... his chord work is outrageous in a good way.
